A Stormy Shoot

Chic to Chic Blog | Maternity | Aubrey Hubbell Design | adesigncollection.com

It’s time for a little throwback Thursday. A few months back, I had the honor of doing a maternity shoot for my lovely friend and now Mama, Michelle. It was a stormy day, the clouds were rolling in and as I drove up north, it started to rain. But as we drove up to the place we planned to shoot, it stopped raining. As I clicked away the camera, the cloudy, gray atmosphere made the shoot. The barn and the brick, the tall grasses and the little bump turned into the most beautiful collection of photos. Michelle was the loveliest while pregnant and now I can’t wait to photograph her sweet bundle of joy, Theodor.

Every morning I wake up, my favorite place to go is to the window. Remember that window next to my favorite chair? That view does things to my heart. In fact all cities do that to me. The reflections of the rising sun off the skyscraper’s windows, driving into the city with the beautiful skyline on display and the lights – oh those lights. Walking through the city almost makes my legs wobble. Each city street has a look about it and those looks, they’re made up of details. And just the other day, I decided to capture a few.

Happy Monday, Friends!

Inspire Me | Lauren with Pearls Poppies Pinkies Up

Chic to Chic Blog | Photos by Pearls Poppies Pinkies Up Blog | www.chictochicblog.wordpress.com

I’ve been inspired by so many bloggers, friends and creatives all around me. Denver is filled with some downright geniuses in the creative world. I’m always discovering new and exciting artists as I slowly dip my foot into this pool of Denver Creatives.

But there’s a special creative I’d like to introduce you to, Lauren. Lauren is the writer behind Pearls Poppies Pinkies Up, several blogs and articles in Darling Magazine and her newest venture, Nellie Magazine. We met through blogging, in particular, the day it snowed on May 1st  here in Denver. We both posted pictures on Instagram – soon finding out we lived just blocks from each other at the time! That turned into a coffee date I won’t soon forget.

After reading her blog and articles on Darling, I built up this image in my head of who this amazing Lauren would be! She was that and so much more. I felt an instant connection to her in that little coffee shop. She is one of the kindest people I know. She’s a lady in every sense of the word, but with a bohemian twist. She is an incredible listener, friend and I never cease to feel completely encouraged after time spent with this precious gal. So, today I wanted to share her, her blog in hopes that her beautiful writing and ability to share in a raw, selfless way will encourage you as much as it has me.

Happy Tuesday, Friends!

Taking on New Design Challenges

Aubrey Hubbell Design | Chic to Chic Blog | adesigncollection.com

This year brings with it many new challenges. One I’m most ecstatic about is the design side of things.

Firstly, I’m excited to announce my freelance design business is now official. I’m officially the owner of Aubrey Hubbell Design, LLC. With this brings the excitement of new clients and opportunities to build my student portfolio. I’ve been so blessed to work with so many great businesses so far.

And in building my portfolio, the second challenge is researching potential internships and jobs here in Denver. I have my eye on a few studios and firms, but in the mean time, I am having fun attending networking events for creatives and the like. I’ve truly met some incredible people and enjoyed getting to know like-minded individuals.

In building my freelance business and portfolio, I’ve really found my passion – graphic design. With my college program, we study digital design in every facet. It’s been a delight to dive into so many different fields of design, 3D animation, video editing as well as graphic design and branding. But through that exploration, I’ve discovered how much graphic design intrigues me. Being a major element in a business’ branding is a wonderful thing to be apart of.

Finally, everyone knows I love a good challenge, but this one – this is a whole new ball game. It’s a little scary to take this next step. Excited as I might be, having my designs viewed by potential employers is a bit daunting. Still new to the field, I’m working on not comparing and being confident in my work. It’s a hard thing to do.

Have any of you experienced this similar time of change? – the process of going from college student to being thrown in the professional world? Working in high school and college is one thing, but the real world – I’m a little scared. Any tips for finding internships, jobs or overall opportunities to meet young professionals? It’s a new year and I’m ready to take the challenge.

I’d love to hear about your experience transitioning into the real world?

Happy Friday, Friends! Can’t wait to hear your advice!

Remember when I shared my first print by Emma Block? Well, since then I’ve slowly gotten three more. I have two more headed my way to complete my dream of a little collage wall above my desk. These prints will be my daily inspiration and reminders. They re by some of my favorite artists. You can find the True Beauty print over at Lindsey Letters, the Pretty Gals over at Emma Block’s Etsy shop and the Hostess Print by Natalie Swarz at Darling Magazine. The Béni print I made myself. They are all framed in the gorgeous $10 RIBBA frames from IKEA. It’s always nice to surround your home with inspiring things. Each of these pieces have a lot of thought behind them and I chose them with special care. I’m so excited to finally have four out of the six and I now I just can’t wait to get them on the wall!

I still have to remind myself that making a home takes time and making a home, “home” doesn’t mean filling it with new things. But having a home that’s put together is important to me and I’m practicing patience as it comes together. There are still so many things on my list to purchase, but I’m learning to be happy and satisfied with my “four out of six”.

With my birthday coming up, my parents decided to surprise me with a canvas photograph I’ve had my eye on. I’ll be sharing as soon as it’s up! I’m always looking for talented illustrators and creatives, who are your favorites?

Today I’d like to introduce you to Terry Maker. She’s not only my professor, but an incredible artist and sculptor. If you’re in the Dallas area, the “You are Here” exhibit opens on Friday, October 18th featuring her art pieces at the Kirk Hopper Fine Art Gallery. You won’t want to miss it! Terry has a fantastic imagination. She creates her works using a variety of commonplace, discarded, domestic objects, combined with traditional art making materials to make sculptures that are cut, drilled and scraped to reveal her masterpieces within. She explores the core principles central to the physical and spiritual concerns inherent in her work.

As a professor, Terry has encouraged me to think outside the box using a multi-disciplinary approach to create things that showcase a topic in a profound and meaningful way. I appreciate that she takes the time to give her opinion on each piece, giving the chance to better it. Sculpture is one of my favorite artistic expressions. It’s so different from any other form. It can be approachable or quite the opposite, but it is still taking up the same spacial area as the viewer. Sculpture is a magnificent form in which to express so many experiences and Terry does that in an unforgettable, masterful way.

If you’re in the Denver area, her piece “Testament” is being displayed at the Redline Gallery. That will be my next stop! See you there!

Happy Wednesday, Friends!

Yesterday, I came home late from class. I checked the mail and waiting for me was a package I’ve been just dying to receive! Today, I’d like to introduce you to the very talented Emma Block. I first found her beautiful illustrations in Darling Magazine. She illustrated each persona and I knew I’d just love to frame them! I couldn’t bring myself to take apart the lovely magazine and I really wanted to contact the illustrator directly. I did a little research and found Emma Block’s Etsy Shop. I connected with her and after visiting her site and seeing an illustration that wasn’t even in the Darling Magazine, I knew I just had to have them! She offered to do a print with both of the beautiful Darling Gals on them. I was floored, jumping up and down with excitement! Emma Block’s incredible talent, whimsical and eye-catching illustrations inspire me. Now whenever I sit at my desk to work, I can look up and see this illustration. It will be a daily inspiration of beauty and talent. Thank you so much, Emma Block for working with me and I look forward to ordering more and more prints in the future!

Happy Thursday, Friends!
