Love Yourself Link Up: A New Friend

Friend Quote | A. Design | Aubrey Hubbell | Chic to Chic Blog | www.chictochicblog.wordpress.com

Today I am writing as part of the Love Yourself Linkup – an ongoing blog series that focuses on topics like self image and body image. A community of women post their thoughts on these topics and tell stories of personal experiences. We’ll share what inspired us, challenged us and more! A couple of months ago, I stepped out of my comfort zone and reached out to a sweet gal/blogger/amazing “Instagrammer”\DIY extraordinaire and asked if she wanted to grab coffee sometime. She replied and said she would! After finding out we had several connections through mutual friends and places we’d lived, we set a date and met. Today was the day.

I got up, got dressed all while the excited butterflies in my stomach fluttered. Meeting someone new makes me a little nervous, but then I couldn’t stop smiling because I knew this lovely lady was going to be special. I sat in my car, plugged in the directions and followed “Map’s” directions to the Bicycle Cafe. As I parked, I said a quick prayer that He’d bless this meet up and in the cafe I went. I got a tweet saying she was almost there. I stood out front, waiting and looking at every movement until I saw her. There she was! This new friend I was just dying to meet.

We hugged, feeling as if we’d already met and in we went. She ordered coffee, I ordered a chai tea. I knew the adrenaline would fill me with energy soon enough. Then it happend. We connected. We talked and talked and talked. When you’ve never met someone, you have a lot to catch up on, twenty-something years it happened to be. We talked about love, life, family, creativity, the future, our blogs, the good, the bad, everything. It was so much fun. This was just what I needed. She encouraged me, inspired me and made really great points that made me think.

This meeting today reminded me how much a new friendship can work wonders for my heart. I felt uplifted and encouraged. I was proud of myself for going out of my comfort zone and reaching out to someone I didn’t know and I’m so glad I did because I now have a genuinely sweet and thoughtful person I can now call my new friend.

Today, I want to encourage you to break out of the norm and reach out to someone you’ve admired from afar, maybe a new coworker or neighbor and make an effort to chat. You never know, a true friendship could blossom from that little coffee date and new friend is so good for the soul.

Happy Tuesday, Friends!

Love Yourself Link Up: Purpose

Purpose Quote | A. Design | Chic to Chic Blog | www.chictochicblog.wordpress.com

Today I am writing as part of the Love Yourself Linkup – an ongoing blog series that focuses on topics like self image and body image. A community of women post their thoughts on these topics and tell stories of personal experiences. We’ll share what inspired us, challenged us and more! Learn more about the Love Yourself Linkup at Anne the Adventurer. If you have a story to share too, join the conversation by writing and clicking to enter below!

What is my purpose in life? What keeps me going every day? What gets me excited? Who do I want to reach in this life? What do I want to be known for after this life passes away? These questions are good to reflect on every now and again. So, today I’m going to reflect in the hope of encouraging you to do the same.

What is my purpose in life? I may not know for sure yet, but I know I was suppose to be here. My beginning is a crazy one. There are some things that are too personal to share, but one of those obstacles before I was born was surviving. My Mama found out at four months pregnant she was having twins. Twins! She was a twin, now SHE was having twins too! But then God saw a different plan and at five months pregnant there was no second heart beat to be found. I was the only one left. Then two months later, at seven months pregnant, my Mama went into early labor and I was delivered at 28 weeks along with the baby that didn’t make it. At 2 pounds 12 ounces, I made it. When I think about that and how many obstacles that were put in front of me before I was barely in existence, I know there must be a purpose for my being. God always has a purpose and knowing He made a way for me to end up in this world let’s me know there is a reason, a purpose I’m here. Think about it! What obstacles did you have to overcome just to end up in this world or what obstacles have you had to overcome to stay? If you’re here, you have a purpose. You may not know yet, but maybe focusing on the next few questions will help bring that purpose into perspective.

What keeps me going every day? Everyday I wake up, shower, get dressed and start my day. I usually spend the day working from home on freelance during the summer or going to class during the fall and spring. Each day is filled with small goals that will eventually get me to my focused, larger goals. I work and do freelance so I can learn, gain experience in a field I love. I also work to save money for my dream of doing two summers of Europe trips before we have babies. I go to classes each semester in hopes that in 2015 I will be the first college graduate in my Mom’s family. I want that certificate to show my future children that they can do it too. It’s not easy, but it’s a huge accomplishment. I also wake up everyday and try to be the best wife I can be. I’m not the best at it, even after three years of marriage, but I keep going and trying. Finally, I’m spending all of this time working on my small goals and trying to master the art of being a wife, so that in a few years, I’ll be able to make my lifelong dream of becoming a Mom, a reality.

What gets me excited? You know, that giddy excitement?! I’d say the time I get the most giddy is bringing my friends into Anthropologie. It’s really goofy, but being surrounded by pretty things, creative projects, books that I could just sit with and read all day and everything in the world I could imagine that can help make being a girl, wife, mother and creative complete. All of the tools are right there, at your fingertips. Being in this store gives me the inspiration for my designs, cooking, being a better friend, a more ladylike lady and so many other things. It truly reflects who I’d like to be. Isn’t that funny? A whole store does that much for me. It’s just one of those places, like a museum that gives you that feeling of unlimited enjoyment and endless inspiration. What gets you excited to conquer and pursue every aspect of your life?

Who do I want to reach in this life? In this life of mine, I hope to reach out to little girls who need to smile a little more, woman who need a boost of confidence and young couples who need encouragement in their marriage. All of these things embody who I am. I’m a little girl at heart that likes to play dress up and sing like no one is listening. I’m a woman who always needs that boost of confidence, whether through a compliment or a gift from a friend making me feel remembered and important. Being encouraged by other young couples showing me that what we go through is the same thing they do. Whether it’s the towels on the floor or the need to have everything perfect before having another couple over, our couple friends go through the same thing! I’d like to relay my stories, so other’s know they’re not alone. Who do you want to reach that encourages you too?

What do I want to be known for after this life passes away? This always feels like such a morbid topic to think about, but it really is something I like to keep on my mind daily. When I meet new people or hang out with old friends, how do I want to be remembered. My goal is to always to be a good friend. A friend who goes the extra mile to make their friends feel confident, important and encouraged. I want to be the girl that does her best to be honest, trustworthy and dependable. I want to be known as a good wife. A good hostess. Someone who was able to experience the world, but never lose site of what’s important. There are so many things I want to leave behind, so I try everyday to do what I can to be a good friend, wife, daughter and eventually I want to be the best mom I can be. What do you want to be known for?

I hope you enjoyed these reflective questions and that they encourage you to find your purpose.

Happy Tuesday, Friends!

A Tasty Snack & A Wall Collage

Apple Snack | Chic to Chic Blog | www.chictochicblog.wordpress.com

I’m enjoying a tasty snack post-workout and doing a little Pinterest “ing” this Monday morning.

1 Apple

1 Tablespoon Natural Peanut Butter (softened)

1 Teaspoon Natural Honey

1 Dash of Cinnamon

Cut up the apple and drizzle the honey and peanut butter over the sliced apples. Add dash a bit of cinnamon on the top and Enjoy!

My Pinterest “ing” consists of adding more to my House Change board. I’m brainstorming on a few things for the new place. One thing I’m really considering is a collage wall. Either in the hallway or beside my desk, I’d love to gather a collection of white or black frames showcasing my favorite prints, quotes and maybe some of my own artwork. This is what Pinterest is inspiring me with!

East Coast Picture Overload.

This year we decided to do a Road Trip. We started with Georgia where I was in my sweet friend’s wedding (more on that later) and then ended it spending time in New York City with my Aunt & Uncle. Along the way we stopped in Hilton Head, South Carolina, Lexington, Virginia, Cherry Hill, NJ and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was a crazy, wild trip and I’m so glad we did it. So many memories were created that I’ll never forget. Some highlights were of course Kylie & Michael’s Wedding, using AIRBNB and finding unique and beautiful places to stay while meeting wonderful people, seeing all of our family along the coast, the Art Museum and seeing Wicked on Broadway. You’ll see bits of these highlights in the photos. So, without further adieu, it’s time for the picture overload.

The Founding Fathers.

I once read, “Anyone can be a Father, but it takes a real man to be a Dad.” That couldn’t be more true and today I’d like to introduce you to my three Dads.

Daddy & Me | Chic to Chic | www.chictochicblog.wordpress.com

Well hello there Daddy. You look like a Hipster I must say and not much has changed. My dad, he’s a wonderful example showing me how to enjoy life to the fullest and never settling for anything less than what I want. He tells stories of life as a child living in the urban city of Philadelphia, playing stickball, sneaking into basketball games and the nicknames the boys all had growing up. He tells stories of his travels backpacking across Europe and seeing all of the different countries, staying in hostiles and even sleeping by the river to make his dreams possible of traveling the beautiful continent. My Dad, he’s one incredible dude. We may not have lived together for most of my life, but this man always made a way for us to see each other. When I was too little to fly alone, he’d fly across the country to pick me up, fly to the East Coast and then back to the West Coast to drop me off again. He always wanted and wants me to get all I can out of life, to make all of my dreams come true and to strive to experience all of the experiences there are in this wild life, just like he did. His dream was to always live by the water and to travel whenever possible. Since I was born his house was always on the water. Now he lives on the beach in California. He’s as tan as ever and still looks the same as he did 20 years ago. Here’s to you, Dad – the most laid back, tissue-holding, surfer dude that doesn’t surf and the most incredible Dad I could’ve asked for. You always want what’s best for me, but never hesitate to support my crazy wild life goals and dreams. I love you – do do do do do do DO DO. Happy Father’s Day!

Daddy Mike & Me | Chic to Chic | www.chictochicblog.wordpress.com

Daddy Mike, you came into my life at the ripe young age of three. You gave me a stuffed Mickey Mouse and you always had time to play with me. You flew me through the air in my “flight suit”, always took me to gun shows, car shows and house hunting. You encouraged my love of fashion, love of expensive things and that if I couldn’t pick one, to buy both. You always wanted and want me to have the best of everything I can even if it costs a little extra. You gave me my love for coffee, taught me how to ride my bike and ski, and always knew from the beginning I was good at design. Bamboo, you called me. To this day I don’t know where that came from, but it stuck. You spoiled me rotten, ate my pretend food and baked cakes in your pretty headboard. The car you bought me for my eighteenth birthday was one of the best gifts you ever gave me and I don’t know how I’ll part with it when it sells. I’ll never forget that first Christmas together when we fed Mom’s cereal to Santa’s reindeer all over the front lawn, sat by the window looking for Santa’s sleigh and the next morning found Santa’s boot prints on the front porch. THAT was amazing. You taught me traditions and how important they are. You taught me that every little thing is important and should be celebrated. Happy Wednesday we said. Finishing the school year wasn’t celebrated perfectly unless we got a whole new outfit for the occasion. Chocolate oranges from London and a train under the tree. You gave me all of these special memories and I’ll always be forever thankful you came in to my life. I love you, Daddy Mike! Happy Father’s Day!

Splash Mountain | Chic to Chic | www.chictochicblog.wordpress.com

See that bright orange shirt? That’s my Father-in-Law, or Papa Brian as I call him. See that red shirt? That’s me. I was eleven in this shot and that’s most of the gang riding Splash Mountain. Little did I know, 9 years later they would become not just family friends, but my family. Papa Brian has been in my life since I was four years old. Of course, I didn’t know then one day he’d be my husband’s Dad and the grandfather to my future kids. And I couldn’t have asked for a better person to fill those shoes. He is an amazing Dad and a wonderful example to my husband, Matt of what a great Father and Husband should be. He loves God and his family more than anything. He’s the life of the party and knows how to dance. He plays basketball in local tournaments as well as with pros practicing at the gym, runs miles on the weekend and is an avid cardboard granola eater. He’s mastered youtube surfing better than most, plays bass like no other and always knows how to make us laugh – especially during family pictures. He always knows how to have a good time and gives the best hugs! I couldn’t be more thankful for such a special father-in-law. I love you, Papa Brian and thank you for creating such a wonderful son!

That’s my three days late, but still going strong Father’s Day post to the Founding Fathers! I love ya’ll!

Happy Wednesday, Friends!
